5050 ▼a "Writing" and "reference" in Ifa? divination chants -- Culture, meaning, proverbs (for Oyekan Owomoyela, in memoriam) -- Reading, writing, and epistemic instability in Fa?gu?nwa?'s adventures -- Sex, gender, and plot in Fa?gu?nwa?'s adventures -- Aki?nwu?mi? I?so?la?'s Efu?nseta?n Ani?wu?ra? and Yoru?ba? woman-being -- Photography and the panegyric in contemporary Yoru?ba? culture.
520 ▼a There is a culturally significant way of being Yoru?ba? that is expressed through dress, greetings, and celebrations--no matter where in the world they take place. Ade?le?ke? Ade?k documents Yoru?ba? patterns of behavior and articulates a philosophy of how to be Yoru?ba? in this innovative study. As he focuses on historical writings, Ifa? divination practices, the use of proverbs in contemporary speech, photography, gendered ideas of dressing well, and the formalities of ceremony and speech at celebratory occasions, Ade?e?ko? contends that being Yoru?ba? is indeed an art and Yoru?ba?-ness is a dynamic phenomenon that responds to cultural shifts as Yoru?ba? people inhabit an increasingly globalized world.
