These techniques are a vital component of clinical practice in equine medicine. There does not currently exist a single reference book that focuses on the common techniques that are used. Many veterinarians and their technicians are forced to rely on the experience gained from only one or two formal teaching labs, on informal lessons learnt during their clinical rotations in school, and post-graduation experience with client-owned animals. This results in a wide range in the quality of external equine cooptation techniques being placed in general equine practice. Practitioners are often unwilling to utilize casting techniques simply because they lack the educational resources and knowledge to properly apply a cast.
